INSERT - THE SCRIPT

We take a glimpse of the script Rick is writing on his computer.  
We NOW NOTICE that on his	monitor is what appears to be a 
FULL-FLEDGED SCREENPLAY being typed.  Upon CLOSER OBSERVATION,
we see this text:

			“With their eyes FOCUSED SOLELY on ONE ANOTHER, 
			Rich and Deanne are unaware of the people that 
			walk PAST THEM.

						RICH
				So what’s your name?

						DEANNE
				My name’s Deanne.

						RICH
				Deanne, nice to meet you.  
				My name’s Rich. 

			Standing face-to-face to each other, Rich and Deanne 
			SHAKE HANDS for the first time...”

BACK TO SCENE

Rick continues typing for a few more seconds before stopping to take a short break.  
LEANING BACK IN HIS CHAIR once again, he unintentionally sets HIS EYES on the 
photo of him and Vanessa Lee on the desk.  Soriano PICKS the photo up and looks 
at it for a while before OPENING ONE OF THE DRAWERS in his table to put the photo 
inside.  

A FEW SECONDS LATER, the CORDLESS PHONE next to his computer keyboard RINGS.  
Soriano PICKS IT UP to answer it.

						RICK
			Hello?

We have NO CLUE as to whom Rick is talking to.  We only watch him as a 
WIDE-EYED expression EMERGES on his face.

						RICK
			Dude- What are you doing back here?
			(A long pause)
			You did WHAT??

Soriano looks at the LANCER banner on his wall.  He then looks at his phone 
and GRINS.  He SHAKES HIS HEAD too.

						RICK
			Man, I gotta tell the other guys about 
			this.  In fact, we’re going to a party 
			tonight...why don’t you come with us and 
			tell us what happened?  Is that cool?
			(A pause)
			All right then, late.

Rick turns off his cordless phone and once again SMILES.  He PONDERS for a second.

						RICK
			Crazy Dandren.

CUT TO:

EXT. DENISE’S HOUSE - AFTERNOON

A BRIEF GLIMPSE of the TWO-STORY house Denise lives in.  It is located 
in an EXTREMELY NICE, VERY QUIET suburban neighborhood.

INT. DENISE’S HOUSE - HER ROOM

The beauty of Denise’s neighborhood CONTRASTS with the SAD LOOK on her face.  
She is talking on the phone with her friend KATHERINE.

INTERCUT - DENISE’S ROOM / KATHERINE’S ROOM

						DENISE
			-so I don’t know what to do, Kathy.  I’ve
			tried calling so many times, but my messages
			haven’t been answered.

						KATHERINE
			Girl, you need to stop worrying.  If your
			messages haven’t been answered, then you know
			something’s wrong here.

						DENISE
			What should I do?

						KATHERINE
			Call the whole thing off, that’s what I would 
			do.  Is there anyone else on your mind?

A pause as a SMILE APPEARS on Denise’s face.

						DENISE
			Well, there’s this one other person I’ve met
			recently.  He’s very nice, and seems to be
			real fond of me.  
			(Katherine nods in response)
			He even bought me ‘belated’ Valentine’s 
			gifts.
			
						KATHERINE
			Well then, there you go.  Forget about 
			that jerk and make a move on this guy.

						DENISE
			I dunno... 

						KATHERINE
			What now?

						DENISE
			I don’t want this person to feel like I’m 
			just settling for him if I DO break the
			whole thing off.

						KATHERINE
			Do whatever you think is right, girl.  Just 
			don’t worry about it at that party tonight.

						DENISE
			I won’t.  So when are we going?

						KATHERINE
			What time is it?
			(she looks at her watch)
			It’s 4:30.  I’ll pick you up in two hours.

						DENISE
			Okay.

						KATHERINE
			You know’s there’s something wrong in your
			relationship when you’re spending Saturday
			night with one of your girlfriends.

Denise has a MOROSE expression on her face after her friend tells her this.  
This ISN’T something Denise wants pointed out to her.

						DENISE
			Thanks for reminding me.

CUT TO:

EXT. SHYAMALAN HOUSE - AFTERNOON

Soriano PARKS his Corolla alongside the curb outside Dandren’s house.  
Parking behind Soriano is Mark’s Civic.  From the cars emerge Rick, Mark 
as well as Johan and Stephen.  

						STEPHEN
			Dude, I wonder why that guy’s back from
			school?

						RICK
			You’ll find out.

						MARK
			Must’ve gotten arrested or something.

						JOHAN
			Probably.

Soriano goes to the door and RINGS THE DOORBELL.  A few seconds later, 
Dandren opens it.

						DANDREN
			Sup dawgs- Long time, no see.

						RICK
			(frowns and grins simultaneously)
			What are you talking about?  It’s been only  
			about, what, two months since we last saw 
			you here...

						STEPHEN
			So what happened?

						DANDREN
			(shrugs)
			I went to a party, a fight broke out- 
			and I got arrested.

Mark looks at Johan and PATS him once on the shoulder.

						MARK
			What’d I tell you?

						DANDREN
			(has a mischievous grin on
			his face)
			So Stephen, how’s Rebecca doing?

						STEPHEN
			(frowns at Dandren’s question)
			Uh, she’s OKAY.  Why do you ask that?

						DANDREN
			Just wondering, man... I still think 
			she’s PRETTY HOT.

Mark, Johan and Rick laugh in response.  

						DANDREN
			(grinning)
			What time’s the party?

						RICK
			(briefly looks at his watch)
			We’re heading there right now.  

						STEPHEN
			And NO, Rebecca is not coming with us.
			She’s going with our other friends.

						DANDREN
			I didn’t say a word.

Dandren’s MOM appears behind him.

						DANDREN’S MOM
			Dandren, you’re not going out again... 
			are you?

						DANDREN
			Relax mom, I won’t get arrested this time.

						DANDREN’S MOM
			You better make sure...or else you’re 
			gonna have to find someone ELSE to 
			bail you out of jail.

						DANDREN
			Yea- I know, I know.

						DANDREN’S MOM
			And don’t be out late!

Dandren’s mom walks away.  Walking out of the front door and LOCKING IT 
behind him, Dandren then looks at his four friends again.  
He shakes his head.

						DANDREN
			And I’m SUPPOSE to be glaaad I’m home.

CUT TO:

EXT. PARK - AFTERNOON

Owen and his NEW GIRLFRIEND-the dancing showgirl at Spearmint Rhino-are 
too busy MAKING OUT in Owen’s car...which is in a parking lot.  There are 
other cars around, but EVERYBODY else is in the park.

						GIRLFRIEND
			Are we gonna be doing this all day, baby?

						OWEN
			Well, we could run around in the park 
			butt-naked, but I think those people 
			out there will mind.
			
						GIRLFRIEND
			Isn’t there any party we could go to?

						OWEN
			What, you don’t like the one in my pants?

Chau’s girlfriend SMILES in response.  She then KISSES HIM EVEN MORE.  
As she does so, Owen gets a pondering look on his face.

						OWEN
			Actually, there is a party tonight.

						GIRLFRIEND
			Can we go??

						OWEN
			Sure thing, babe... I just hope
			what’s-her-name won’t be there.

						GIRLFRIEND
			You mean your OTHER girlfriend?

Chau has a NON-ENTHUSIASTIC LOOK on his face.

						OWEN
			(nods)
			Yea- My OTHER girlfriend.

						GIRLFRIEND
			Sooo- Do I have anything in common with her?

						OWEN
			Yea, you both have jobs.  The only
			difference is, I like yours better.

						GIRLFRIEND
			And why’s that??

						OWEN
			Because yours involve blowing.

His girl smiles.  

						GIRLFRIEND
			You’re silly.

						OWEN
			(checking out his girl’s body)
			No, I’m aroused!

They continue MAKING OUT.
		
CUT TO:

EXT. UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, IRVINE - FRAT HOUSE - EVENING

SUBTITLE: “UC IRVINE...”

SUBTITLE #2: “7:00 P.M.”

There are DOZENS OF PARTYGOERS KICKING BACK outside the building.  MORE CARS 
are arriving in the parking lot.

INT. FRATERNITY HOUSE - PARTY - EVENING

There are LOTS OF COLLEGE STUDENTS inside the room DRINKING AND HAVING A GOOD 
TIME.  While other people are RELAXING TO THE MUSIC, Dandren, Rick, Mark, Stephen 
and Johan barely enter the room.  They check out the SURROUNDING ATMOSPHERE.

						MARK
			So this is how a frat party looks like,
			huh?

						STEPHEN
			I thought there’d be more boozing 
			going on.

						DANDREN
			And, UH, more sex.

Now turning their heads, they spot Albert, Melvin, Ben and the other two guys 
they ran into AT STARBUCKS a few weeks earlier.  Melvin WAVES HIS ARM at them 
while Ben is too busy drinking BEER from his cup.  Albert uses his hand to form 
a cup around his mouth.  He is about to yell something NONSENSICAL.

						ALBERT
			(apparently drunk)
			Hey, TOSSS THE SALAAAD!!!

Albert, and the other guys-who are also DRUNK, begin shouting and PUMPING 
THEIR FISTS into the air.

						JOHAN
			At least you guys got the BOOZING part right.

Albert and the other guys CONTINUE MAKING A FOOL out of themselves.

CUT TO:

EXT. ROAD - EVENING

Katherine’s car CRUISES DOWN a road leading to the university.

INT. KATHERINE’S CAR - EVENING

There is a BRIEF SILENCE inside Katherine’s car.  Denise is the first one to 
speak.

						DENISE
			So who do you think’s gonna be there?

						KATHERINE
			I dunno.  A LOT of fine-looking 
			guys, hopefully.

Denise nods.

						KATHERINE
			Do you know who’s really fine, though? 
			Niema.  Now there’s a guy I wouldn’t mind 
			asking me for my digits.

						DENISE
			Maybe you’ll see him tonight.

						KATHERINE
			MAYBE.

Another pause.

						DENISE
			I wonder who I’ll see.

						KATHERINE
			Well, hopefully- the person you were MEANT 
			to be with.

						DENISE
			Don’t be TOO sure.

						KATHERINE
			I’m telling you- By the time this party is
			over, you would’ve already found your 
			significant other.  I’ll even bet you on that.

						DENISE
			(smiles)
			No thanks.  
			(a pause)
			How much were you willing to bet?

CUT TO:

INT. FRATERNITY HOUSE - PARTY - EVENING

Dandren, and the other guys are still looking around to see if there are 
more people they know present at this party.  They TURN THEIR HEADS to 
look at the big screen TV that a COUPLE OF OTHER STUDENTS sitting on a 
couch are looking at.  On the TV, the movie “INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF 
DOOM” is being shown.

						RICK
			Haven’t seen that movie in a while.

Soriano once again hears the voice of someone call him from the side.  
It is Niema, who is holding a cup filled with BEER.

						NIEMA
			Hey Soriano, this is the umpteenth 
			time we ran into each other.

The two exchange high fives.

						RICK
			Yup- I just can’t stand being away from
			you, man.

						NIEMA
			Dick, whatever.  Hey- 
			(turns to look at all the girls
			inside the room)
			There’re a lot of fine girls in this
			room, buddy.  Make a move. 
			
						RICK
			(looks to his left)
			Well, I’m pretty sure YOU did.

Niema frowns and looks to his left as well.  A FEW FEET AWAY, THREE BEAUTIFUL 
BLONDE GIRLS are waving at him.  Mihran ENTHUSIASTICALLY waves back.

						RICK
			So who told you about this party?

						NIEMA
			Dude-this fraternity’s HUGE, man...
			even Long Beach has a chapter in it.

						RICK
			No kidding?

						NIEMA
			Yup...

TWO BEAUTIFUL BRUNETTES walk up to Mihran to summon him to kick it with them.  
He turns to begin walking away with them.  He briefly looks at Rick.

						NIEMA
			And you just might run into someone 
			you didn’t expect to be here.

Niema then walks away.  A few seconds later, Jon Alba walks past Rick...giving 
him an ARROGANT SMILE as two BEAUTIFUL ASIAN GIRLS each stand by his side.  
LIP STICK MARKS dot most of Alba’s face.  He then walks away.  Rick, NOT 
BELIEVING what he just saw, has a surprised expression in response.

Dandren, Mark, Johan and Stephen GATHER around a small table that has SODA 
BOTTLES, a VARIETY OF CHIPS, and a bowl of SALSA SAUCE on it.  With a cup 
of beer in hand, they are too busy FEASTING on chips that they CONSTANTLY 
DIP into the bowl of salsa.

While they do so, Johan and Stephen SPOT Davin, Rebecca, TWO OF HER FEMALE 
FRIENDS, Rob and Madsen enter the room.  The newcomers walk over to the two 
other UCLA students.

						DAVIN
			What’s up, ladies?

						JOHAN
			Sup dawg- Where’s Owen?

						ROB
			(while checking out the girls)
			He said he’s gonna stop by with his girl.  I
			guess she has a day off from stripping or
			something.
			
						STEPHEN
			Say what??  Since when was his girl a 
			stripper?

						REBECCA
			(briefly puts an arm around
			Stephen’s shoulder)
			Since now...this is Owen’s NEW girlfriend.

						STEPHEN
			Are you serious?

						REBECCA
			Yup.
			(she kisses Stephen on the cheek
			before walking away)
			I guess he finally wanted PENETRATION in his
			relationship.

Rebecca and the other UCLA students walk away.  Stephen and Johan 
frown at each other.

						STEPHEN
			Did YOU know Owen had a new girlfriend?

Johan shakes his head.

CUT TO:

EXT. UC IRVINE - FRAT HOUSE - PARKING LOT - EVENING

Katherine’s car PULLS UP in the parking lot at the frat house.  A few seconds 
later, her and Denise EMERGE from the vehicle.  Denise has a flyer in her hand 
that is the SAME as the one Jon Alba had at Spearmint Rhino.

						KATHERINE
			So are you ready to meet your significant
			other?

						DENISE
			(smiles)
			Whatever, Kathy...

Denise gives the flyer back to Katherine as they approach the frat house.

CUT TO:

INT. FRATERNITY HOUSE - PARTY - EVENING

Rick NOW JOINS Dandren, Mark, Johan and Stephen at the table.

						RICK
			So Dandren, give us the full story on why 
			your ass was brought back to SoCal.

						DANDREN
			Well actually, man...I was just minding
			my own business.  But one of my homeboys
			was dying to start up shit with other
			homeboys...and he dragged me into it.

						MARK
			Serious?

						DANDREN
			Yup.  Some homeboy took out a knife to shank
			my homeboy, and me and my other homeboy had
			to join in to prevent him from doing that to
			my homeboy.  And then the pigs came on over 
			and arrested me and my homeboys and brought 
			our ass to jail.  And then my parents had to 
			send cash over to NoCal to bail me out.  But  
			don’t ask me anything about my homeboys, cuz
			I don’t know what happened to them.

Rick, Johan, Stephen and Mark have a BLANK LOOK on their faces.  Mark looks 
at the other three guys.

						MARK
			What did he just say?

						DANDREN
			Dude, I told you the whole story on what 
			happened!

						STEPHEN
			Well, I kinda zoned out after the fourth 
			‘homeboy.’

						JOHAN
			Ditto.

						DANDREN
			Nevermind...

Dandren shakes his head as he continues to DIP chips into the salsa.  Rick 
observes him as he does so.

						RICK
			Hey, you’re not double-dipping...are you?

Stephen looks at the television set to see what is now taking place in “The Temple 
of Doom.”  

						STEPHEN
			Yo, this is my favorite scene.

It is the scene where INDIANA JONES-who is inside a cave-is on a bluff 
overlooking a CULT CEREMONY that is taking place.

						STEPHEN
			I don’t know about you guys but I’m gonna
			watch this part.

Stephen walks over to the couch that is in front of the television set.  
Another GUY and his GIRLFRIEND are already sitting on the sofa.  A few seconds 
later, Dandren, Mark and Johan turn to join their friend in watching the movie.  
Dandren turns to look at Rick, and gestures at the TV.

						DANDREN
			Hey choida, are you gonna watch?

						RICK
			(talking with his mouth full)
			After I finish this.

Rick gestures to ALL THE FOOD that’s on the table in front of him.  As his 
four friends walk to the couch to watch “Indiana Jones,” Rick CONTINUES FEASTING 
on all of the party treats.  A few seconds later, he inadvertently turns to look 
at the MAIN ENTRANCE to the room, and sees DENISE AND HER FRIEND WALK IN.
STUNNED, Soriano IMMEDIATELY STOPS eating.  

He leaves the table to walk over to Denise. Dandren, Johan and Stephen frown 
as Rick goes by WITHOUT SAYING A SINGLE WORD to them.  Mark notices Rick 
approaching Denise and nods.

						MARK
			That must be his chick.

						STEPHEN
			What the heck?
			(looks at Johan)
			We know that girl!

Denise and her friend are looking around the room as Rick walks toward them.  
Denise and her friend SMILE AND COMMENT to each other about what’s taking place 
inside the room.  Denise finally sees Rick, and the fun-going expression on 
her face changes to THAT of surprise.

Rick walks up to Denise and they both end up standing FACE-TO-FACE to each other.

						RICK
			Hey!

						DENISE
Hi Ricky. 

Katherine looks at Rick and then to Denise.

						KATHERINE
			You two know each other?

						DENISE
			(nods)
			Yea, he’s in my lab class.  Ricky, I would  
			like you to meet Katherine.  Katherine- 
			Ricky.

						RICK
			Nice to meet you.

He and Katherine SHAKE HANDS.  Rick then looks back at Denise.

						RICK
			So...How did you find out about this party?
			
						DENISE
			Um, Kathy had a flyer.  She got it from 
			someone she knows in a frat at Long Beach.

Katherine takes out the flyer and shows it to Rick.  He nods.

						RICK
			Ohhh, I see.  Actually- 
			(a pause)
			This is the party I told you about at 
			school today.  The one I invited you to.

A pause as Katherine looks at her friend and then to Rick.  She senses the 
EMOTION in the situation.

						KATHERINE
			I’m gonna get something to eat.  You two  	
			continue talking.

Katherine walks away.  As she does so, she spots Niema standing 
across the room from her.  SURPRISED, she looks back at Denise.

						KATHERINE
			Niema’s here!  Gotta talk to him...  

She quickly walks away.  Rick and Denise are now ALONE.

						RICK
			Um, Denise I wanted to- 

						DENISE
			Rick, I have to tell you something.

A pause as we get a glimpse of the TV.  In this scene from INDIANA JONES, a 
helpless prisoner entrapped inside a cage is A FEW MOMENTS AWAY from getting 
his heart ripped out.

						DENISE
			It’s been something I had to tell you 
			ever since you handed me those gifts today.

Rick steps closer to her to SOFTLY hold one of her hands, a little smile apparent 
on his face.  The prisoner on INDIANA JONES is moments away from his FATE...

						RICK
			What is it?

A brief pause.  Denise has the look of someone STRUGGLING to find the right 
words to say to a person she does not want to hurt...but she knows she will. 

						DENISE
			(hesitantly)
			I have a boyfriend.

Rick has a BLANK EXPRESSION on his face for a couple of seconds.  THE PRISONER 
FINALLY GETS HIS HEART RIPPED OUT OF HIS CHEST IN THE TEMPLE OF DOOM.  

Back to reality, Denise begins to feel bad as she sees a LOOK OF DEJECTION begin 
to appear in her lab partner’s eyes.  Rick lets go of Denise’s hand.

						RICK
			So all those smiles in class meant nothing,
			huh?  And that hug you gave me today... 

						DENISE
			They meant something!
			(Ricks nods in response)
			I’m sorry...but I’ve been going through a lot
			of problems in my relationship lately-and I 
			just needed someone to talk to.
			I didn’t mean to give you the wrong signals,	
			Rick.  I guess I shouldn’t have been too 
			outgoing when I met you.

						RICK
			But you were.

The two stare at each other for a couple of seconds.

						DENISE
			(soothingly)
			You’ll meet the girl of your dreams, 
			eventually.  I’m sure of it.

						RICK
			(a pause)
			I thought I already did. 

Rick smiles before finally turning around to WALK AWAY from Denise.  She LOOKS SAD 
as she watches him join Dandren and the other guys in watching the film.  Dandren, 
Stephen, Mark and Johan look at their dejected friend and then to Denise...a LOOK 
OF PUZZLEMENT on their faces.

Denise stands at her spot for a couple more seconds and briefly 
smiles at the four guys.  She then turns and leaves.  Stephen 
looks at Rick-who is TRYING TO CONCENTRATE on the movie.  

						STEPHEN
			Sorry Rick, we should’ve told you earlier.

						RICK
			Tell me what?

						STEPHEN
			About Denise having a boyfriend.  Me 
			and Johan already knew about it.

						RICK
			You did?

Stephen and Johan NOD.

						RICK
			Well- Who IS her boyfriend?
			
A pause.

						JOHAN
			She’s with Owen.

An ANGRY LOOK appears on Rick’s face.

						RICK
			What??  

INT. SPEARMINT RHINO - LOUNGE - FLASHBACK

Owen and his showgirl walk toward the area where Rick and his friends are standing.  
Rick approaches him, and looks at her before saying something to the UCLA student.

						RICK
			Aren’t you getting a little TOO friendly?

						OWEN
			(frowns as he turns to look at his 
			showgirl and then to Rick)
			So?... 
			(not wanting his showgirl to hear,
			he leans over to speak to Rick
			in a low voice)
			Fuck my girlfriend.

BACK TO PRESENT DAY

						RICK
			He doesn’t even love her.

Rick then looks at Denise, and watches her WALK AWAY.

CUT TO:

INT. FRATERNITY HOUSE - STAIRWAY - EVENING

Owen and his girlfriend LAUGH as they head up the staircase.

						GIRLFRIEND
			I hope this is fun!

						OWEN
			Don’t worry, baby-you’ll have a good time...

The COUPLE enter the room where the party is being held.

INT. FRATERNITY HOUSE - PARTY - EVENING

Owen and his girlfriend are laughing together ONCE MORE as they enter the room.  
Rick and Denise spot the COUPLE walk in, but it is Denise who Chau sees FIRST.

						OWEN
			Yo, what’s she doing here?
