EXT. MAUI SHORE - DAWN

KNEELING on the beach, KIAN touches the sand softly with his hands
while his wife KEKANI and ANOTHER WARRIOR watch him do so as they
remain standing up. Kian, with a heavily-built physical stature, has
light brown skin and short black hair...which is almost all shaven
off. Kekani also has light brown skin but long black hair. She is
beautiful, with both an exotic and confident feel about her. Kian
and Kekani are wearing their warrior garb, but their masks are taken
off. Only the other warrior is already prepped for warfare.

After a while, Kian picks up his weapons and then stands up from the
sand. He turns around to face his wife and the other warrior.

			KIAN
			Are you two ready?

			KEKANI
(smiles, while the other warrior nods)
			We are ready, Kian.

Kian nods back and then turns away from the two other warriors to
walk in the opposite direction. The three warriors then head towards
KAMEHAMEHA’S OTHER SOLDIERS. The garrison is stationed several
hundred meters from the beach.

HUNDREDS OF WARRIORS leave their slender canoes...which are lined up on
the shore for thousands of meters. While Kekani walks off to talk to
her fellow soldiers, Kian approaches JOHN YOUNG, a castaway English
sailor.

			YOUNG
He’s starting your battle pretty soon.

			KIAN
(smiles, a sarcastic tone in his voice)
Hmm. ‘My’ battle? You mean ‘his’
			battle...

DOZENS of warriors prepare their weapons for the conflict.

			KIAN
What do you think, friend? Is this
attack going to be worth it?

			YOUNG
			(smiles as well)
			Wait and see.
			(A pause)
If you can walk around this island
			without being killed tonight,
			you’ll know it’s worth it.

The warriors continue to prepare their weapons. Another English
sailor, ISAAC DAVIS, walks up to the two discussants.

			YOUNG
So how is Kekani’s training coming along?

			KIAN
			Pretty well, pretty well...
She is learning the true ways of
			fighting.

Kian looks at the muskets both sailors are holding in their hands.

			KIAN
			She’ll have no need for
			those metal contraptions you are
			carrying.

			DAVIS
			(smiles in response)
You’re going to have to resort to this weapon
sooner or later, Kian. War has changed.

After preparing their weapons, all the warriors run to gather around
a certain spot. In this spot stands KAMEHAMEHA. The Chief has a
bulky physique. The warrior garb that he is wearing is the color of
gold.

			YOUNG
Let’s see what your leader has to say.

Kian remains quiet as he follows the sailors toward the crowd that
gathers around Kamehameha. Kian finds a spot next to his wife
Kekani. The Chief begins to address his army.

			KAMEHAMEHA
Several hours from now, you will
be recovering from the cuts and bruises
you receive in this battle. Some of you
will still be crying in pain from the limbs
			you may lose in combat...

Kian snorts to himself, and then looks at Kekani to see what her
response is to the Chief’s opening words. She has a serious look on her
face.

			KAMEHAMEHA
			(his words even louder)
But, despite all this...you will remain
vigilant, as you will not let anyone
invade what will ‘soon’ be our
			territory!

Most of the warriors--Kekani among them--begin to CHEER in response.
Kian remains expressionless.

			KAMEHAMEHA
If you wish to think otherwise, and
decide not to fight this battle, I have
			a nice alternative for you...

The warriors listen INTENTLY.

			KAMEHAMEHA
			Hand your life over to
			Kukailimoku!

EVERYONE except Kian erupt in LAUGHTER.

			YOUNG
			Who’s Kukailimoku?

			KIAN
			‘His’ war god.

Kekani turns to look at Kian.

			KAMEHAMEHA
			Now get ready to fight!!!

The warriors SHOUT in approval as they pick up their weapons and get
ready to march into battle. Kekani approaches Kian just as he is about
to join the other soldiers.

			KEKANI
You don’t seem very eager to fight.

			KIAN
I like to hide my emotion inside.

			KEKANI
Then when will you let it out?

			KIAN
When we win, or if one of us
			dies in this forsaken battle.

			KEKANI
			(in a glum tone)
			If one of us dies?

Kekani has a blank expression on her face after her husband says this.
Kian, smiling, walks up to her to kiss her on her cheeks.

			KIAN
			Don’t worry, Kekani. It
			won’t be you.

Kian caresses his wife’s face with his hands. He then walks past her
to join the garrison.

All the warriors gather into several marching columns. After checking
to see if everyone is ready for battle, Kamehameha—at the front of the
army—turns around to begin walking. The garrison marches inland from
the beach.

EXT. MAUI - IAO VALLEY - MORNING

We take our first glimpse of the surrounding rain forest on Maui as well
as the Iao Needle...a unique rock formation.

Hundreds of Kamehameha’s soldiers emerge from underneath trees in the
towering rain forest. A few seconds later, the soldiers stand still to
wait for the enemy to show itself.

As Kian and Kekani scan the environment, another female warrior name
KALIN walks up to the couple.

			KALIN
			Do you see them?

			KEKANI
			Not yet.

Kalin’s question is soon answered when she hears the shouts of unknown
people somewhere in the rain forest. As Kamehameha looks on, hundreds
of these unknown people emerge from underneath trees that are opposite
the direction from where the Chief’s warriors are standing.

			KIAN
			(looks at Kekani)
			Are you scared, Kekani?

			KEKANI
			Of course not.
			(frowns at the remark)
			Why would you ask that?

			KIAN
			I’m just concerned...
			(A pause)
If you need help, signal to me.

			KEKANI
(A slight smile on her face)
			That’s ‘if’ I need help.

Kekani briefly looks at Kalin, who is still standing near the couple.
Kian’s wife puts her mask on just as KAMANN, another warrior, walks up
to the three people.

			KAMANN
Are all of you ready to spill blood?

			KIAN
			‘I’ am.

The four warriors turn their heads to look at the enemy. Everybody in
KALANIKUPULE’S ARMY speaks in HAWAIIAN LANGUAGE.

Nothing but shouting by Kalanikupule’s warriors occurs for a few seconds.
Moments later, Kamehameha gives the battle cry.

			KAMEHAMEHA
(in Hawaiian language with English subtitles)
			End their lives!

Kekani and the rest of the garrison charge forward to engage
Kalanikupule’s forces. After putting his mask on, Kian charges
forward as well. The enemy warriors do the same...and the air between
the hills of Iao Valley is filled with flying arrows as both sides
of the conflict launch them at one another.

While John Young and Isaac Davis use muskets to take on the opposing
soldiers, Kian and Kekani uses less-sophisticated weapons like daggers,
spears, and bow and arrows for the conflict.

Kamehameha shows his ferocious nature by savagely beating opponents
using his own weapons. At one point however, he is jumped on by an
enemy soldier and is almost stabbed when one of Kamehameha’s fellow
warriors, KEKUHAUPI0, comes to the Chief’s aid and kills the soldier
with a dagger.

Despite showing her fighting skills by taking on different enemy
warriors, Kekani is at times threatened of being overwhelmed by
her opponents. But just as Kian is about to come to her aid to
prevent her from being killed in combat, Kekani is able to escape
mortal danger.

At one point, Kamehameha looks at Kekani and sees how she fares in
battle. As the conflict continues to take place, Kalanikupule’s forces
eventually find themselves losing to the much stronger army of
Kamehameha.

The armies of Kalanikupule and Kamehameha find themselves fighting on a
large hill adjacent to the Iao Needle. With Kalanikupule and several of
his warriors escaping into the shrubs, Kamehameha’s men unleash the
final blow as hundreds of arrows are shot at the losing warriors...who
cannot find anywhere else to go.

Several seconds later, the noise of battle begins to simmer
down as less and less warriors on Kalanikupule’s side are
left alive. Kian briefly looks on as several of Kamehameha’s
warriors escort the captured PRINCESS KEOPUOLANI through the
battleground.

After Kian kills his last opponent, Kekani joins him at where he is
standing. They hear the cheers of fellow warriors, and look on as
Kamehameha--standing near the top of the hill where the battle
ended--raises his arm in triumph.

While Kekani is cheering along with the rest of the army, Kian once
again has a blank look on his face.

EXT. PACIFIC OCEAN - KALANIKUPULE’S CANOE - DAY

Mist sprays up from the water as Kalanikupule’s warriors row the chief’s
canoe away from Maui. Surrounding Kalanikupule’s canoe are several
others.

Kalanikupule wipes off his face the blood that splashed onto him during
the battle. He has a furious facial expression when one of his men
sitting behind him slouches forward in the canoe to ask him a question.

			WARRIOR ONE
			(in Hawaiian, but subtitled)
Where do we go now, Chief?

A brief pause.

			KALANIKUPULE
			(in Hawaiian, but subtitled)
Back to Oahu...to plot out our next
			attack.

Kalanikupule leans over to the port side of the canoe to dip his
hands into the seawater...causing the blood that he wiped off his
face to wash off.

EXT. IAO VALLEY - ENCAMPMENT - DAY

Kekani wipes blood stains off her dagger while walking through the
camp set up in the middle of the rain forest in Iao Valley.
Kamehameha’s warriors go about their business throughout the area.

Kekani is still cleaning her weapon when Kekuhaupio calls her from
behind.

			KEKUHAUPIO
			Kekani.

Kekani turns around to look at the other warrior. She then smiles and
bows after doing so.

			KEKANI
			Yes?

			KEKUHAUPIO
The Chief wishes to speak to you.
			(Kekani frowns)
			It is about today’s battle.

			KEKANI
			What about it?

			KEKUHAUPIO
			Come and hear for yourself.

Kekani follows the teacher as he begins walking through the camp area.

INT. ENCAMPMENT - KAMEHAMEHA’S TEMPORARY QUARTER

After Kekuhaupio escorts her to the entrance, Kekani enters the Chief’s
quarter. As she does so, she looks on as Kamehameha’s wounds are being
tended to by another warrior. She then scans the rest of the room, and
sees Princess Keopuolani surrounded by several warriors. The Princess
has a look of comfort on her face.

Kamehameha sees the young woman standing next to the entrance, and
summons her to step closer into the hut.

			KAMEHAMEHA
			Come in, Kekani.

			KEKANI
You wish to speak to me?

			KAMEHAMEHA
			Indeed, I do. Come...no need
to stay that far from me.
			(Smiles)
My sight has been set on the other
			beautiful woman in this room.

Kekani turns to look at the princess again, who is being offered food by
one of the warriors around her.

			KAMEHAMEHA
			Kalanikupule abandoned her.
			Distressing, isn’t it?

			KEKANI
			(slightly smiles)
So what did you want to speak to me
			about, Your Highness?

			KAMEHAMEHA
It is about this morning’s battle.
I saw the way you fought today.
			I was impressed.

			KEKANI
Give credit to my husband. It was
Kian who taught me how to fight.

			KAMEHAMEHA
			(nods)
			Yes, he does deserve credit.
			I was wondering...

A brief pause.

			KAMEHAMEHA
How would you like to make your
husband even more prouder of you?

			KEKANI
(she has a bigger smile on her face)
I would like that a lot.

			KAMEHAMEHA
Of course you do. By now, I presume you
			already met those two Englishmen
			fighting with us?

			KEKANI
You mean Isaac Davis and John Young?

Kamehameha nods.

			KEKANI
Yes, my husband talks to them
			often.

			KAMEHAMEHA
Good. I asked them something...if they
didn’t find it too troubling to teach
you how to use those metal weapons
			of theirs. Those so-called muskets.

Kekani has a curious look on her face.

			KEKANI
Those weapons ‘do’ look easy to use.

			KAMEHAMEHA
They look very easy to use...
			Those Englishmen didn’t find it
			troubling at all, which means
they will teach you to become
the first woman in my army to use this
			musket.

			KEKANI
(a surprised expression on her face)
			I will?

			KAMEHAMEHA
Yes, you will. If you succeed,
			you will command great respect
among the other warriors. How does
			that sound?

			KEKANI
			I think it is an honor...but I don’t think
Kian will like the idea of me using a
			weapon he’s not familiar with.

			KAMEHAMEHA
Once he sees you become greatly skilled
at using a musket, his opinion will
			change...Don’t you agree?

A pause.

			KEKANI
			I agree.

			KAMEHAMEHA
Good, good. Then you may leave now
and tell your husband about this matter.

Kekani bows slightly.

			KAMEHAMEHA
I will come out shortly...to inform
everyone on what my next plan is.

			KEKANI
			Yes, Your Highness.

			KAMEHAMEHA
			You may leave now.

EXT. IAO VALLEY - ENCAMPMENT - DAY

Kekani exits the hut and is about to walk away from it when
another person calls to her from behind.

			KIAN (V.O.)
What did he want with you?

Kekani turns to look at her husband.

			KEKANI
(a surprised tone in her voice)
Kian! How did you know I was here?

			KIAN
			Word gets around. Especially when
a High Chief summons a common warrior
			to talk to...and in private.

			KEKANI
			We talked about my training.

			KIAN
			Oh? And what about?

			KEKANI
He said I should use a better weapon
			to fight with next time.

			KIAN
			(frowns)
			Like what?

			KEKANI
Those weapons that Young and Davis use.

			KIAN
			Muskets?

Kekani nods.

			KIAN
(a bitter look on his face)
You don’t need that device...you did
just well with the weapons we used this
			morning.

			KEKANI
The Chief said I can command
			great respect from the army.

			KIAN
(A furious tone in his voice)
An army that does what?? Fight for
a land we don’t even live on? Taking
			something that isn’t rightfully ours?

			KEKANI
			What are you talking about?

Kian and Kekani turn to briefly stare at the Chief’s quarter.

			KIAN
			Look, Kamehameha wants to unify
all of the Hawaiian Islands. I
see nothing wrong with that, but
the way he seeks to reach this goal...

			KEKANI
You mean by warfare? I don’t...
see any other way to gain
			unification.

			KIAN
			What about so-called...diplomacy?

			KEKANI
			You know how jealous these
chiefs are of each other! They despise
the idea of being led by one king.

			KIAN
And Kamehameha is trying to be that
			‘one’ king...

			KEKANI
			Kian...If you were so unsupportive
of him, then you wouldn’t have
fought so hard in today’s battle.

A brief silence.

			KEKANI
You already pointed out you didn’t
want to fight for land we didn’t
live on...and you did just that.
This violence will end once the Chief
			reaches his goal.

Kian walks up to his wife.

			KIAN
Let’s hope he reaches his goal soon.

Kekani remains silent as Kian puts her hand in his.

			KIAN
(has a tone of resignation in his voice)
I don’t like his crusade to
unite all these islands, Kekani, but...
I ‘do’ like his crusade of making you a
			better warrior.

Kekani smiles in response.

CUT TO:

EXT. IAO VALLEY - ENCAMPMENT - EVENING

Walking to the middle of the camp area, with the other warriors going
about their business, Kekuhaupio speaks in a loud voice.

			KEKUHAUPIO
			Everyone...Gather around here! The
Chief wishes to speak to you.

The warriors stop what they are doing and group around where
Kekuhaupio is standing. A few seconds later, Kamehameha appears
next to the teacher and begins addressing the
troops.

			KAMEHAMEHA
Later tonight, I will be leaving this
island to continue the war. I will be
heading back to Hawaii, while most of
you will remain here to guard our
			territory.

Listening to Kamehameha’s words, Kian frowns to a warrior next to him.

			KAMEHAMEHA
When I come back, I expect Maui to be
fully secured for my arrival. There
can be no sign of invasion. Any
			questions?

Kalin steps forward and raises her hand.

			KAMEHAMEHA
			Yes, Kalin?

			KALIN
Will you be sending more troops
in case we ‘do’ fall under attack,
			Your Highness?

			KAMEHAMEHA
			(smiles)
You have by word on it...
but I don’t expect this island
			to be attacked.
			Any other question?

Nobody else raises hand.

			KAMEHAMEHA
			Then that is all.

			KEKUHAUPIO
			(loudly)
			Carry on.

Everyone disperses after the Chief and the teacher walk away. Kian
approaches Kamann, who is standing a few feet from him.

			KIAN
			Did you hear that? He
			doesn’t ‘expect this island
			to be attacked.’

			KAMANN
			And what if it does?

			KIAN
Unless reinforcement ‘is’ sent, I feel
the Chief has gone too far.

EXT. IAO VALLEY - ENCAMPMENT - NIGHT

The camp is nearly quiet as most warriors are asleep. Only a few
soldiers walk around the area. The sound of gunshots echo around the
forest.

On a hill overlooking the fire-lit camp, Kian watches as his wife
is being instructed by Young and Davis on how to use a musket.
Kekani maintains composure while aiming the weapon.

Despite the torches dimly lighting the area, she is still able to
shoot targets in the darkness. After trying to suppress it, an
impressed look finally emerges on Kian’ face.

DISSOLVE TO:

EXT. PACIFIC OCEAN - DAWN

A silhouette of Maui as the sun rises behind it.

SUBTITLE: “1791.”

EXT. PACIFIC OCEAN - UNKNOWN ARMADA - DAWN

Several slender canoes approach Maui in the distance.

EXT. PACIFIC OCEAN - EUROPEAN SHIP - DAY

SUBTITLE: “OFF THE KOHALA COAST OF HAWAII.”

Kamehameha stands on the deck of the ship while looking down at his
warriors’ canoes, which are moving swiftly through the water next
to the large vessel.

INT. EUROPEAN SHIP – MAIN DECK

Turning his attention to the waters beyond, the Chief spots hundreds
of other canoes looming in the distance. A warrior in a nearby canoe
yells to him.

INT. WARRIOR’S CANOE

			WARRIOR TWO
(in Hawaiian language, with English subtitles)
Chief, the Two Brothers are here!

INT. EUROPEAN SHIP – MAIN DECK

Kamehameha nods as he looks down at the warrior. He then turns to
walk down the deck, and approaches one of the ship’s officers.

			OFFICER
			Did they arrive?

			KAMEHAMEHA
			As predicted.

			OFFICER
(nods as he looks at his crewmates)
All right everyone, the enemy is here.
			Get into firing position!

The crewmates nod as each of them run to different parts of the ship.
Kamehameha walks to the bow of the vessel, and is soon joined by
Kekuhaupio.

			KEKUHAUPIO
			Is that Kaeo?

			KAMEHAMEHA
			And Kahekili. He should’ve
			stayed in Oahu.

EXT. PACIFIC OCEAN – EUROPEAN SHIP – DAY

A glimpse of the ship as a mounted cannon on its deck fires.

EXT. PACIFIC OCEAN - ENEMY SHIPS - DAY

The canoes of Kaeo and Kahekili’s warriors spread apart in
the water as the cannon ball splashes hard into the ocean. The
canoes near the center of impact rock back and forth from the
disturbance in the water.

EXT. PACIFIC OCEAN - EUROPEAN SHIP - DAY

Another glimpse of the ship as the cannon on its deck fires again.

EXT. PACIFIC OCEAN - ENEMY SHIPS - DAY

One of the enemy canoes disintegrates, as the cannonball strikes hard
upon impact. Now the rest of Kahekili’s forces disperse to avoid
becoming the next target.

EXT. PACIFIC OCEAN - KAMEHAMEHA’S SHIPS - DAY

Kamehameha’s canoes quickly penetrate Kahekili’s armada, and a fierce
battle takes place between the two sides. Some warriors shoot arrows
at their opponents, while others use daggers to stab their enemies as
their canoes pass next to each other. The water is soon filled with
bodies of soldiers who fall out of their canoes.

INT. EUROPEAN SHIP - MAIN DECK

With the mounted cannon still firing, Kamehameha continues to watch
the battle from his vantage point on the ship’s deck.

CUT TO:

EXT. MAUI - ENCAMPMENT - DAY

Kneeling on dirt, Kian picks up a fruit that fell from the mango tree
next to him. While eating the fruit, he spits the seeds disgustingly
at the ground. The warrior now has a barely trimmed mustache and
beard on his face. Kekani walks up to him.

			KEKANI
			Are you still mad?

Kian continues to eat the fruit. He does not make eye contact
with his wife.

			KIAN
			Why shouldn’t I be?

			KEKANI
			So it’s been 11 months...we were
able to settle nicely on this island.

After eating all the juicy parts of the fruit, Kian angrily tosses it
on the ground.

			KIAN
			11 months, Kekani...11 months!
You’d think he would be done
			uniting those islands by now.

			KEKANI
That kind of thing takes time.

Kians shakes his head in disgust.

			KIAN
			Takes time... I don’t
			even remember how our home
			looks like.

			KEKANI
			Now you’re exaggerating.

			KIAN
			Yea, well. Soon I won’t
be saying that just to make
			a point.

With her husband’s back towards her, Kekani walks up to him to rest
both hands on his shoulder.

			KIAN
At least those sailors were able to
			leave this rock.

			KEKANI
			But only temporarily. Young
and Davis will be back, Kian.

			KIAN
They should stay off this island
for as long as they can.

			KEKANI
And what if we were already home?
What do you plan for us to do?

			KIAN
			Something far more fruitful than
			guarding this island... That much
			is obvious.

			KEKANI
(briefly looks down at the musket she
			is carrying)
I haven’t completed my training yet.

			KIAN
You have other skills to fall back on.

Kekani begins to have a bitter look on her face.

			KEKANI
You mean using a spear? A dagger?
Why are you still against me using a gun in
			battle?

Kian turns around and rests one hand underneath Kekani’s chin. He then
kisses his wife on the cheek.

			KIAN
I don’t want to break fighting tradition.

			KEKANI
(rolls her eyes at the comment)
			Fighting tradition. I--

Kekani is about to say something else when she sees Kamann running
towards her and Kian on the beach. Kian turns around to see who the
newcomer is.

			KIAN
			What is it, Kamann?

			KAMANN
			(catching his breath)
			We found...unmarked canoes...
on the other...side of the beach...

			KEKANI
			How many?

			KAMANN
			About...a hundred...

			KIAN
			A hundred???

			KAMANN
They must’ve came here at dawn.

Kian and Kekani frown at each other. They then walk towards the panting
warrior.

			KIAN
			Show us.

EXT. MAUI - BEACH - DAY

The couple follows Kamann through the shrubs and to the beach. Standing
near the unmarked canoes are TWENTY OTHER WARRIORS who are wondering
where the canoes originated from.

			KIAN
			Any clues?

A warrior shakes his head.

			KAMANN
			These could belong to Kalanikupule’s
			men, but we’re not sure.

			KIAN
			Or...they could belong to Keoua’s
			warriors.

			KEKANI
			Who’s Keoua?

			KIAN
			Another ‘beloved’ rival of
			Kamehameha.
			(To the other warriors)
Did you begin searching for the
			invaders?

WARRIOR THREE nods his head.

			KIAN
			Good. This is where those
			reinforcements come along.

			WARRIOR THREE
			Reinforcements?

			KAMANN
Surely you didn’t forget what the Chief
said 10 months ago, did you?

A pause as Warrior Three has a dumbfounded look on his face.

			KIAN
			I sure didn’t.

All the warriors suddenly look towards inland after they hear
YELLING coming in that direction. They are about to run to that area
when several arrows suddenly appear from among the trees and impale
Warrior Three and six other troops in the chest.

The remaining 16 warriors take cover behind the canoes on the shore,
and watch as other warriors of Kamehameha emerge from the trees on
one side of the beach...and less-than-a-hundred UNKNOWN WARRIORS
emerge from the other side.

Kian and the other warriors near the canoes begin firing arrows at the
invaders, while Kekani takes out her musket and begins shooting at the
enemy troops. Other fellow warriors take out daggers and charge
towards their unknown opponents.

Kekani emerges from her hiding place behind the canoe to get a better
shot at her targets. Kian has a horrified look on his face as she
does so.

			KIAN
			Kekani, what are you doing???

Kian watches his wife as she is able to take out many enemy warriors.
Kian is about to pull his wife to the ground after spotting an enemy
troop point his bow at her...but does not do so after Kekani fires
point blank at the troop’s head.

Kekani’s fellow soldiers are not so lucky as most of them are taken
down by arrows. Kamann is observing Kian’s wife in action when two
arrows strike him on the right shoulder.

Kian’s left forearm—which is protruding from above the canoe’s edge—is
struck by an arrow as well. He grimaces in pain as he pulls the
arrow’s tip out of his flesh.

			KEKANI
			(seeing Kian getting wounded)
			Kian!!!

Kekani quickly gets behind the canoe to assess her husband’s wound.

			KIAN
			It’s not severe.

			KEKANI
			Let me see...

			KIAN
			(shoves Kekani away from him)
			Forget about me right now...keep
			shooting!

After hesitating for a moment, Kekani leaves the cover of the
canoe again, and begins shooting.

Moments later, the din of the battle begins to quiet down as Kekani
and the surviving warriors are able to silence the invaders. When
the conflict ends, Kekani goes back to where Kian is.

			KEKANI
			(looks at Kian’s wound)
			‘Now’ let me see.

Kekani removes a piece of clothe from her garment to wrap around
Kian’s forearm. Other warriors are tending Kamann’s injuries.

Kian stares at his wife as she tends to him.

			KIAN
			So much for fighting tradition.

His wife has a puzzled look on her face as she finishes covering his
forearm with the clothe.

			KEKANI
			What?

			KIAN
The way you fought with that musket...
			You proved me wrong, beloved.

A pause.
			KIAN
			You have great potential.

Kekani gazes at her husband for a few seconds before a smile
emerges on her face. That smile disappears when she sees an angry
look starting to appear on Kian’s face after he stares
at his wound and then back to Kekani.

			KEKANI
			What’s wrong?

Kian touches Kekani’s face for a second, and then stands up to walk
away from her.

			KIAN
(to the other troops on the beach)
			Everyone, gather around!

			WARRIOR FOUR
			What for?

			KIAN
You’ll know when I tell you...

He looks at the bodies of the invaders, and notices that there are
some survivors among them.

			KIAN
(to Kalin, who is among the other warriors)
Some of them are still alive.
			Kill them!

			KALIN
But one of them can tell us
			who sent them--

			KIAN
			(quickly interrupts Kalin)
			I said kill them!

Kalin hesitates before she finally nods and walks away. Kekani
steps up to Kian.

			KEKANI
			Kian, what’s going on?

			KIAN
			Kamehameha didn’t send reinforcements...
			That’s what’s going on.

Kian walks away from her as he waits for all the warriors to group up.
Kekani steps toward him again.

			KEKANI
			What are you doing now?

			KIAN
Finding out how many other warriors
			are tired of this island.

Kian walks away again. After they all group up, Kian begins
addressing the warriors.

			KIAN
10 months ago, our beloved Chief
			Kamehameha promised that he would
send more troops if we were
			attacked...

			KIAN (cont’d)
We were attacked, and there were no
troops to arrive to help us defend
			against these attackers...

			KIAN (cont’d)
Our Chief may not have known about this
little ambush, but he could have sent
more warriors to this rock anyway. And
			so I ask you...

Kekani listens attentively to what Kian has to say next.

			KIAN
How many of you want to leave this island
			‘now’??

Kekani has a surprised expression on her face as the warriors begin
murmuring to each other.

			WARRIOR FOUR
But we need the Chief’s approval, Kian.

Some warriors yell “Yeah!” in response to Warrior Four’s remark.

			KAMANN
It doesn’t matter if we get approval or	not.
As long as we get no support from outside
this island , we’re as good as dead here!

			WARRIOR FIVE
I say we leave with Kian.

Some warriors again begin yelling “Yeah!” in response. Kekani walks
up to her husband.

			KEKANI
Are you crazy? The Chief will have you
killed if he finds out you’ve
			deserted this island!

			KIAN
You mean he will have ‘us’ killed.

Kekani frowns at the response.

			KIAN
What do you say, Kekani? Do you want
to leave this island or not?

A long pause as the other warriors stare at Kekani.

			KEKANI
			Not. I’m staying here.

Some warriors are surprised at Kekani’s answer. After a few seconds
of silence, Kian smiles at his wife.

			KIAN
Don’t you want to do something
			better in life?

			KEKANI
Not until these islands are united.

			KIAN
Then I guess I’ll see you after the war,
			beloved.

Kian turns to walk away from his wife. Kekani, a stunned look on her
face, walks faster to catch up with her husband.

			KEKANI
			You’re deserting me?

			KIAN
I don’t want to stay on this island
			any longer.

			KEKANI
So you’re leaving me...just like that?

			KIAN
(quickly turns around to face Kekani)
I asked you if you wanted to leave, and you
said no. This is where your loyalty comes
			into question...

The other warriors look on as the husband and wife continue their
conversation.

			KIAN
Would you rather stay behind and fight
for a man whose goal might not be attained...
or would you rather stay with your husband,
and go off to do better	things with our
			time besides fighting?

			KEKANI
That is a tough decision to make...

			KIAN
			(smiles)
It shouldn’t be. If you know which
person your loyalty should go to
			first.

			KEKANI
You’re right. It should go to you...

Kekani embraces her husband and kisses him on the lips.

			KEKANI
But as I said before, I’m staying
			here.

The other warriors begin to murmur to themselves in stunned
disbelief.

			KIAN
			(after a long pause)
			Then I bid you farewell.

Kian turns around to walk away from his wife.

			KIAN
How many of you are leaving with me?

FIFTEEN OTHER WARRIORS voice their approval and follow Kian
as he walks down the beach. As Kekani stares at her husband,
a look of dejection on her face, Kamann approaches her.

			KAMANN
Why don’t you go with him?

			KEKANI
			He’s made his decision.

Kamann remains silent for a few seconds.

			KAMANN
I’ll make sure he doesn’t forget you.

Kekani then watches as Kamann runs off to join the other fifteen
warriors and Kian. Kekani and the remaining troops continue to
stare at the deserters.

			KEKANI
How could you do this to me?

Kekani tries to hide her anger as she continues to watch her husband
walk away from her.

EXT. - MAUI - FOREST - DAY

Kamann catches up to Kian just as they are entering the forest from
the beach.

			KAMANN
			Kian, wait up!

Kian comes to a stop so the other warrior can reach him.

			KAMANN
Are you sure you want to leave
			your wife behind like that?

			KIAN
			She’s made her choice, Kamann.
			But don’t worry...

Kian and the other deserters continue walking.

			KIAN
We will return. To test her skills as a
true warrior... and to make Kamehameha
regret leaving us on this island.

			KAMANN
So ‘exactly’ where are we going to go?

			KIAN
Back to Hawaii, without anybody else
knowing, of course...and make our plans.

Kamann nods in response.

			KAMANN
Not only that, but recruit more warriors
for our army. Kamehameha will kill us in
seconds if we return with just this many
			people.

Kian looks at the fifteen warriors walking next to him.

CUT TO:

EXT. MAUI-BEACH-EVENING

Standing on a hill overlooking the ocean, Kekani looks at the canoes
of Kian and the other deserters as they row away from the island.
The canoes’ silhouettes could barely be made out in the dimming sky.

Kekani then looks down at the musket in her right hand, putting it
on the ground as she continues to watch the canoes fade away in the
distance.
